Abstract
The area now designated Nigeria has a long history of communities trading across fro n- tiers with neighbours and distant lands lo ng b e- fore the arrival of the Europeans and the intr o- duction of modern international tra d ing system. The various polities that emerged and co n- trolled different parts of the area pa r ticipated effectively and benefited from long distance trade, which afforded them the o p portunity to exchange their abundance for what they lacked but which was available elsewhere whether far or near. With reference to the nature of the N i- gerian environment, regional specialisation, e x- ternal trade relations and the capacity of th e traditional economy, this paper examines inte r- national trade in pre colonial Nigeria and its impact on the econ o my. The paper concludes that the distortion of inter regional trade a r- rangement and the structure of pre colonial Nigerian economy began with the gradual pen e- tration of Europeans into the hinterland to e f- fect direct purchase of palm produce d from producers after the abolition of slave trade.
